The character i liked the most is the doctors wife because from the start she was strong and help his husband the doctor which just went blind and not only that she sacrifice herself by going to that horrible place where she could never get out of there just to help her husband for not leaving him alone in that place. This character is strong and brave for not caring if she was going to be infected and then getting blind also she didn't care about leaving her whole life till something good like a vaccine or something came up. She has a good will and very concerning about others not only her husband but also the other blind men that needed help, she's also very wise by acting as a blind but also seeing everything that happened but that was good and bad because she had to make decisions for saying this or not.
My response to the doctors wife would be that after al she has gone through the blind and not getting also blind making her immune we can say really shows the real meaning of being a helpful person who can help the people in greatest need and not letting to die alone, even though they couldn't be with their family in the time of crisis which in this case is the epidemic, they made their own family with the great help from this great woman who made life easier for the blind specially because she is the only one who can see. but the made it easier for people to sleep and even walk, a problem that she had that she handled it very good was that no one apart from his husband could know that she wasn't blind because if every blind knew it would be a disaster everyone would want the attention of her and if the guards knew they would do many experiments on her seeing why she is immune from the blind.

What else can we say about "blindness" in the novel? Why do you thnk the author includes a character who is immune to blindness in the novel?

The character I liked the most in the novel was the doctor's wife as well. She was the main character and is the character we have the most information on, which helps to be able to make a judgement about her better. The interesting thing is that she witnesses all the events happening on the novel, and has the most action on it as well. She is a strong willed and brave woman. Not only for being with her husband, but for having the courage to kill the leader. She's also very modest, since being the only one who was able to see gave her a notorious advantage over the other, she could have claimed to be the new leader and do as she willed. The reason why I guess the author decided to have someone who was immune to the blindness is the simple fact that she witnessed everything therefore the story could be told focusing on what she saw, even if that was in third person. Everything told in the novel happened around her, and was the world she lived in. In the case of the character being blind as the other, not only she wouldn't have something that set her apart from the rest, but it wouldn't have the same effect as to imagine someone who has to go through all those difficulties and worst of all witness them as well.
Something curious is the way the author doesn't seem to mind about the details about the blindess. There is never a clear reason for the blindess. The human behavior in such circumstances seem to be the purpose and the focus of the novel. The issues with the lifestyle nowdays can be clearly seen in the novel, when there's a water and food shortage from the lack of people being to produce. Maria Jose Borja 11 Int.

The character that I like the most during this great book wrote by Jose Saramago, called Blindness, was the doctor's wife. The doctor's wife was the character that I like the most because of the following reasons. The first reason is because the doctor's wife always thought first in the blind people, than first in herself. She always did the things thinking more in the blind people than in herself knowing she was not blind. Also she is my favorite character because she was always one step forward; she always saw things beyond, and that's one of the reason why everyone survive this terrible pain. And finally, the last reason of why she is the character I like the most and probably the most important of all is her kindness and love that she had towards his husband and to ll the blind people that lived with her. She made a lot of sacrifices to accomplish her goal that was to take all the blind people alive from that terrible place. For example, she and the other women were raped to have food and also she clean the cloths of the blind and went alone to find them food and she organized everything, thank to her, they all survive
The doctor's wife is a very intelligent, clever, wise, fast thinker, kind, and a sacrifice person. She is a person that sacrifices a lot for the well fare of others because she does not think only about herself. According to the last pages of the book, she is a pretty woman, even though she is close to her 50. And finally my response to her is that I like how prudent she was by not telling the people in the hospital that she could see because then, she would have been in a major issue, so that was very helpful and important to the people that she live with.

Saramago states that every single person in the world goes blind, except one, the doctor’s wife. She is the only one who doesn’t get affected by the epidemic and, as a reader, you wonder why she is immune to this blindess. The reason of her immunity is never stated, but I consider her my favorite character because she simbollicaly represents optimism, a possible cure for the blindness. The doctor’s wife is a clever, helpful and compassionate character who turns out to have the only two eyes that can see the quick development of the horrorific situation as a consequence of the epidemic. “You do not know, you cannot know, what it means to have eyes in a world in which everyone else is blind, I am not a queen, no, I am simply the one who was born to see this horror, you can feel it, I both feel and see it” (pg 276) These words are said by her, and she means that she was the only one who could witness the terrible chain of events that led to the catastrophic society (if you could call it a society) in which they all ended up living. She could have been a normal person with an everyday life, but because of the conditions she had to face she developed an incredible inner strength, which she used not just for helping others but for helping herself. This shows the strong facet individuals can cultivate even in situations where everything seems to be completely destroyed. Being able to see in a world of blind people encounters the character to a huge moral responsibility, which she can’t stand all by herself, but at the same time it reveals a deep sense of hope and reassurance. The character I liked the most in Blindness is the doctor's wife. I really enjoyed to read her presence in the novel. The doctor's wife is the main character due to the fact that mysteriously she is the only one that doesn't get infected with white blindness. This makes her be the one in charged in some way to help everyone that is suffering this infection. Most of the time she shows herself as an optimistic, caring, supportive and concerned human being. She never shows fear to go blind. What really matters to her is to share with her husband and help him overcome the difficult moments his going through, since he is already blind. This character shows that she wants the best for all the people inside the hospital and never gives up. She even risks her life in order to help others. I learned positive things from her attitude in the story. The importance of being brave and courageous, even though she is in risk of danger. Many times I feel afraid in situations that can put me in risk. I also appreciated the way she is always willing to help others with out asking something back. The last thing that I recognized of her personality is the moral courage that she shows to help others. This made me realize that even in strong situations as these humans can always put the best effort to survive and maintain calm for better.

The character that I most like in the book, Blindness, is the doctor. This one of the main characters in the book and plays an important role in the story. He starts the investigation about the white blindness when he meets the first blind man. When the blindness strikes him he controls himself and does not go crazy. After knowing that this blindness is contagious he contacts the Ministry of Health and the Government, because he knew that something was going to go wrong. When the doctor was in the asylum he showed his character of leadership towards the other blind interns in the asylum. He helped people and worried about them. He knew how to respond to any problem that happened during the quarantine and he was ready for solving it by any needs. He was always there for everyone and he was always worried in his wife and wanting to know what was happening. This is my favorite character of the book because he shows a character of respect, empathy and leadership during the blindness. He knew that living in the environment of the asylum with other strangers was going to be harsh but he knew that everyone was going through a hard time so he was a helpful person throughout the whole experience. In the novel Blindness by Jose Saramago one of the main characters which is also the character i like the most is the doctors wife. The doctors wife is everybody's favorite not only because she is an outstanding women but also by her bravery against the problems she has to face. One of the problems is watching everyone around her become blind except her, and that gives her the choice to take responsibility and be the peoples eyes; she takes that choice and thats what makes her so brave. She takes care of her husband and all the people that have lost their sight because of the weird epidemic of blindness that no one can explain. The doctors wife is brave, optimistic, helpful, but one word that describes her the most is fearless. She is not scared of the epidemic going on around her and around the people she loves, she fights it and helps people that have it with no fear of getting it. In my point of view she is a very strong women that never gave up even though she got tired of it many times. At the end the author never gives the reader any clue on why and how the blindness happened but something that it did give us was the knowledge of what bravery and kindness is, because that is what the doctors wife gave not only her husband but every single person that was blind, even if she didn't know them. She was there for them all, helping them all the way. If it were a true story I would look up to her and many others to. Melissa Messler

The leader of ward three was a character that demonstrated how bad someone can be, even in the situations where the good side of everyone should be shown, instead of the bad one. What I mean, is that everything they were living was very hard, but things could have been better with the help and support of all for all. But this leader decided to do the opposite of supporting, which made the situation harder even for him, since he ended up being killed. The way in which he controlled the rest of the blind people was heartless, cruel, evil and very selfish. He didn’t realize that in those circumstances he was the same as everyone, since they were living the same conditions. He didn’t take a minute to think what he would be feeling if he was the one treated as bad as he was treating them. He took advantage of the fear that the others had of the gun and threatened them with no mercy. This is why the leader of ward three is the character I like the least. What I would tell him is that at the end, any of his actions were worth it, because the valuable things he took of the others weren’t valuable anymore. And the moments of pleasure he had with those women, ended with the real pleasure he could’ve had, the opportunity of being free and the possibility of recovering his sight.

The character that I like the most was the doctor’s wife. She is the main character in the novel and also the only one that was mysteriously immune to the white blindness. Since she was the only one that could see in the mental asylum she felt in some way, responsible for the rest of the people. Even though she didn’t know any of the people who she suddenly had to live with, she decided to help each one of them not only in their physical needs, but in their physiological needs as well. When she realized that living in the mental asylum wasn’t going to be an easy task, she just faced it with a positive attitude, and instead of thinking about herself and her husband, she decided to take care of the rest of the people as well. I liked the way she was so caring and loving with all of them, how she didn’t care if she didn’t eat as long as the other people have food to eat. Another thing I liked about her was that she was intelligent and she always had hope that one day all this sudden illness was going to end and everything was going to be how it used to be, and somehow that was how all the group manage to survive. She was always tried to find a way to make their lives in the asylum the best, she tried to make the blind people’s life a lot more easier, and when she was faced with the bad people in the asylum she just had courage to deal with them, and in some way that was how they escape from the hospital. Even though she had to watch everything that was happening and had no one to support her, she never let herself down and that’s what I like about her. My response to her is that she is very supportive, caring, loving, intelligent woman who fought for the survival and happiness of the people who she had to live with. She was also very respectful and never acted as if she was the leader of all of them only because she could see, instead she tried to be there for all, and even though it was hard to do all that work by herself, she was brave and she manage to keep all the people in her group a life. She new that she will have to give a lot to be able to help others, she had to make a lot of sacrifices for the rest of the people but she never asked for something in exchange. Daniela Godoy

Let's hear about your reactions to other characters. How about the woman with the dark glasses? The man with the eye patch? The car thief?

my favorite character will be the doctor's wife because we have a more detail description of her being a fighter, brave kind, successful, wise and sharp woman makes everyone to like her. she has the qualities of "the good guy" which makes hers the main character in the novel, and we can see why everyone likes her. But there where two character that i really enjoyed in the novel, these characters are: the first blind man ant the car thief. those two characters are the ones that make me the novel interesting enough to keep on reading; the way they both fight at the beginning of the novel makes the novel have a good beginning. we can see how Saramago give every character their own unique description. the first blind man is knieve, the thief a trouble maker, the woman with the dark glasses luxurious, the doctor is kind, the little kid innocent and the guy with the eye patch is mysterious. this is what makes every character unique form others. i really liked the way all characters work together trough the novel.
I think Saramago include a character that is not blind for readers to feel in the perspective of the doctor's wife. this way we can learn the details easier as the narrator tells us the living hell that the doctor's wife is living, seeing and feeling. this special thing that Saramago put into his work makes a connection with the theme too; he is trying to tells us humans will have to survive with help of others and by instinct.
my character response is to the doctor's wife, you are a woman with true characteristics which distinguish you from other. not only because you are not blind but you have the ability to keep hard situations under control and with no panic, with a lion heart which it is big enough ti take care of everyone even dough it is very hard.

This book has a lot of great characters that had made me reflect and think on how human beings are. Even though the doctors wife is one of the most stand out and powerful characters in the book I personally consider another character my favorite, which is the girl with dark glasses. Through out the novel even though she is blind she shows such a great courage and such a nice and good personality that really got me thinking how much a person can change through a rough situation. She at first is described as a girl who does not know what she wants with her life and the author also says " this women could be classed as a prostitute". (pg. 22) So as you can see she was not entirely a girl who knew what was best for her. After she goes blind and has to face the cruel world she now had to live in I saw somehow a change in her. She acted as a mother to the boy with the squint even though she knew she had no responsibility towards him and no experience that had been told. Also she is always in a position where she wants to help the doctors wife in any possible way. She shows not only a true commitment but also a trust that is not compare to any other. "Don't worry I trust you ...Id rather die than betray you" (pg. 175). She feels safe around the doctors wife and somehow knows she is a good woman. Later on after going threw the horrible things that almost all the woman went threw something inside of her changes and I know it did in every woman but the major change I saw was in her. I think she became mature and she began to realize other things in life. Almost at the end also it shows how she kind of has a relationship with the old man with the eye-patch. Even though she knows he is old she felt in love with the person he was from the inside. She is shown as a beautiful woman who for me grows in the book and has a lot to do on how people change and realize things after strong situations, which is a way human beings are. I can say she was defiantly a girl I could relate to and she was definitely my favorite.
