Wikipedia defines setting as "the time, location, circumstances in which a story takes place...(that) provides the main backdrop and mood for a story or stories. Setting can be referred to as milieu to include a context (especially society) beyond the immediate surroundings."
In what setting(s) does Frankenstein take place? How do the characters respond to this/these setting(s)? What is your opinion of this/these setting(s) and why?

Victor Frankenstein lives in a house in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, with his family, in the 18th century. He describes the city as a very pleasant place with a clear flowing river in spring. He also has the opportunity to go and study in Germany, where he likes it too, and go to London and Scotland. Victor seems to enjoy nature a lot because he's repeatedly using appreciative adjectives to the mountains, and the weather, for example. The setting has a strong influence on Victor because when he is feeling ill and down, sunshine and a beautiful landscape are able to lift his spirits up, making him forget about the tragedies in his life, even if it is for a little while. My opinion on the setting is that it is very charming and inviteful, in contrast to the circumstances that the characters go through, and for me, symbolizing that playing with nature is very tempting, but at any second, a storm may come and bring along a really long winter. Victor played with nature by creating a living being, and he didn't except things to go wrong and bring him so much suffering. MarĂa Clara Santacruz

This novel starts in the cold seas of the north, there is where Robert Walton was in an expedition with his crew. There he found Victor and the story goes to another setting. The story takes plance in the beautiful city of Geneva, Switzerland where Victor lives with his family during the 18 th Century, so that means that the story takes place in the past. The city where he lives is described as a peacefull and beautifull place filled with green fields and beautiful mountains. Victor is very affected by the setting and he apreciates a lot the natural things that the landscape gives to him. During his travel to Germany where he went to study in the university of Ingolstadt he is also happy but he is most focused on his studies. Scotland and London also have a great impact on him because the cold weather and the dull sun make him feel depresed. The setting is very important for the main characters of the book because they are very influenced by this. The setting of the book changes constantly, in Geneva he is always happy and in peace beacause it is his home town and he is often influenced by the beaufitul lanscape, when he is suffering from guilt from the monster the setting is more dull and on his travels he never is as happy as in Geneva. The stroy is very affected by the setting and the setting as the mood of the characters are always changing, this is what makes frankestein a great novel. Aurelio Cordovez

Victor Frankenstein is originally from Switzerland. He lived in Geneva as a child in the 18th century and he describes his childhood as the most perfect childhood anyone can have. This first setting helps the character's mood to be a cheerful one all through his early years. Then, he goes to study in Ingolstadt, Germany. It is a different kind of scenery but it encourages Victor to study and to feed his appetite for knowledge, being the cause of his idea to create life. Then, he goes all through Europe and he ends up in England. There, he feels remorse about creating the creature and he encounters it. Finally, he pursues the creature through the mountains ending in the northern sea. Where the ice and cold end with his life.
