The character I like the most is Alex. As the main character, is amazing to watch how he changes throughout the novel. At the beginning, Alex is more like a robot programmed for violence. He finds in music something more alike to ecstasy, and he relates music directly with violence. He lives in a society were teen age violence is a great issue. He represents a violent, yet successful teen ager. He hangs out with all the "popular" gangs and he is even the leader of his gang. But, as he is sent to jail to follow the Ludovico's Treatment, Alex changes drastically. He becomes a brain washed person, who now follows societies expectations. But his will for violence leads him to doing it again. Alex throughout the novel gives very important quotes, and makes you question, what is good, and what is bad. Is it better to follow you own beleives even though they hurt others? Or is it better to be like a robot and follow other persons expectations? Pierre Castro 11 Int

The character I like the most is Alex. Alex is the most complex character in the novel, and can be analyze in many different ways, making it a very interesting character. At first we see Alex as a very violent person that seems to have no piety, but then we can see he has taste for classical music and relates it to the several violent episodes he has. We then also realize that he is and innate leader that instead of focusing this talent in a positive way he use it to damage other people. Even though Alex at the beginning only thinks in violence he then is send to jail after being involved in many violent acts, and then his capacity of free will is remove, modifying his attitude toward his actions. Taking this right away of him can also be considered a dishonor act like the ones Alex had previously committed, because he is not able to act with his normal thoughts even though this involves he damage others, because at the end of the day good or bad that is his essence as a human. It is not until the last chapter that we can see a real change in him in were he realizes all of what he has done. Maria Isabel Romero 11

The character I most like is Alex because he changes drastically in the story. At the beginning, Alex’s violent side is depicted through the things he does with his friends like robbing the corner store or raping and beating the writer and his wife. In the society Alex lives in, violence is a common thing and therefore Alex is not seen as a bad person but rather as an important person. He thoroughly enjoys opera, most of all Beethoven, and he uses the music to relax, although he also relates it to violence which pleasurable to him. As soon as Alex goes to jail and goes through the Ludovico’s treatment, he changes completely. His desires for violence are gone because they make him sick, literally, and he turns into a good person per say. When he goes out to the real world he finds out the being a good person isn’t enough to survive. In the end the reader is left with the dilemma of good vs. evil and personal opinion vs. society’s expectations. Annie Tveten 11th grade.

I am intrigued that you all like Alex. Aside from his role as the novel´s narrator and the changes he undergoes, WHY do you like him? Do your feelings toward him change at any point? Is he ALWAYS sympathetic? How do you account for your affinity for him? Do you think the author attempts to make him likeable?

I think we all, in a way, like Alex the best. Probably because he's about the only likeable character in the novel, I mean, sure there are a lot more characters, but they are either unlikeable or just not there long enough to cause an impression. I think what causes this is the fact that the book is written from Alex's point of view, which leads to the reader understanding the novel from his perspectie as well. So if Alex finds a character unlikeable, so does the reader. That same factor is probably what causes Alex himself to be so likeable, since the only thing we know is what Alex tells us we feel sort of compelled to ignore some of the brutallity and cruelty in his acts because of the way he describes them so joyously and enthusiastically in his "gentleman's goloss". In the same way, we feel rage against his traitors and later captors and feel sorry for him when he's being "cured", constantly and conviniently forgetting the fact that he is a horrible human being and that he, in a way, is getting nothing less than what he deserves. Alex, himself is not a particularly likeable character, it is the way that the book is written that make us believe that we like him because he likes himself so much. At least that's what I think. I'm also intrigued that everyone like Alex, he being so violent and mean. It's true the way he changes throughout the book and sometimes it's difficult to understand his reactions, his necessity of punching people in the face or simply robing. Though, my favorite character is P. R. Deltoid, Alex's corrective adviser, knowing he is not one of the main characters in the novel, I think he makes an important role in Alex's life. Deltoid knows pretty much all about what is happening around Alex's world. He wants Alex to be and act as a normal teenager even though he isn't. From my point of view, P. R. Deltoid is one of the few characters in the novel who really care about Alex and worry about him. Obviously, it is a hard job to treat people who think wrong things are right to do, who's characteristics are not normal and feelings out of control. In the novel, we can see how Deltoid gets out of control seeing Alex in jail, he looks at him disappointed telling Alex he would be on court anyways, at the end he spats Alex's face making him say "thank you sir." Besides the punch, it shows the affection the officer had to Alex, how much he cared about him. In my opinion, the only thing Alex needed, was support and no more treason. P. R. Deltoid somehow, showed Alex respect like no other character in the novel. Alegria Ponce 11th

Alex, the main character, is probably the only one in the novel who can be analyzed. He´s the narrator and the story mostly talks about him and his experiences. After thinking of his personality and behavior, Alex is the character I liked the least. The first aspect to analyze about Alex is his leadership. Yes, he is a leader, imposes respect and people follow him, but he leads his droogs to rob, rape and harm other people. This is a waste of ability that not too many people have, and produces fear. At the beginning of the novel we can see that Alex has made the decision of being evil, violent and disrespectful. In the middle of the novel we can see a major change, because he can no longer harm anyone. But is this what he decided to do? Or he is forced to stop? The Ludovico´s technique is what changes him, he would like to keep harming other people, and keep robbing and rapping, but can´t because he feel seek. Yes, maybe it is a drastic change in Alex and a character, but his personality keeps being the same, he´s not a better person after it. He then makes another group and again leads them to do wrong. How can someone tall his life story pointing out how much harm and destruction he created. How could he receive all the hospitality from F. Alexander knowing he killed his wife and that he had ruin his life? In my point of view Alex is not a good person, has no respect for others, and had the opportunity to change and be good but he didn´t take it. Manuela Ribadeneira 11

The character who I like the least is Alex. Not only because of his aggresive personality, but also because he knows that being bad would not take him anywhere. His hostile actions towards the people who surround him confirm his awful character. It is not only with his actions that he is violent but also with the way he talks to others. Being a terrible person is one thing but feeling pleasure about his crimes is another. While he had many chances to change who he was, he was never able to learn from his mistakes, and although he had the chance to become a better person, he went back to being a horrible individual. This proves that even though he knew where the consequenses of his actions would take him, he had no iterest in becoming a better person. Ana Maria Lopez P.

The character I dislike the most is Alex. He is really into the violence, raping, robbing and all that “horrorshow” stuff. He also is really into that hallucinogen drinks that he drinks in the Korova Milk bar along with his drugs. He is an immature boy that has fun with his friends but this costs the misery for others. An example is when they go to HOME. They hit the old man and rape his wife in front of him which in long terms effects resulted in her death. Another example is when Alex gets into he cat ladie mansion and accidentally kills her. They also fought against other gangs like Billiboy and his droogs and this was their so called “fun. ” I started liking Alex better when he started to mature. When he realized that the things he used to do, all that violence was for nothing and caused no fun at all. Mauricio Cattani

My favorite character is Alex because through out the novel he is the only character we get to know deeply. he is a teen ager that loves violence, classical music and likes to drink milk with laced stimulants. What I like about this character is the way he describes his actions and his feelings every moment he went through like the crimes he commit and the pain he felt during and after the Ludovico’s treatment that makes the novel more interesting and vivid. Still what I liked the most about him was the maturity he obtained after all his experiences and his final decision toward his future. Alejandra Alvarez 11th

The character I dislike the most is Alex, even though he changes dramatically during the novel. At the beginning he acts with no common sense at all and demonstrates to be a very impulsive person. He doesn’t care about others and acts selfishly through the book. He enjoys beating people and rapping women and violence becomes normal for him. After he receives treatment in jail he becomes a completely different person. He realizes the bad consequences violence has and decides to be a productive person for society. At the beginning he didn’t have reason for being so violent and didn’t had any goals or expectative in life. Then he changes but he didn’t choose to be a good person he was forced to. I didn’t like the way they forced him change I think that should be decided by him and if he wanted to keep being a violent person he should have stayed in jail like every other prisoner. Alex is the character I liked the least. I find it weird that a lot of people like him the best because there are no events, in my opinion, that make him likable, there are only times when the reader might feel pity but not love. Alex performs outrageous acts of violence just for the mere reason of having pleasure and entertaining himself. He is arrogant because he leads all the time and punishes his own friends for dumb reasons. He does things impulsively, without thinking beforehand or thinking about consequences. And he does this stuff at the beggining and the end, so he doesn't actually evolve of change at all when finally he turns out with the same horrible behavior. Even when Alex is under the hypnotic effect of the Ludovic technique, he demonstrates he isn't good because when he coincidentaly goes to F. Alexander's house when he was wounded, the host tells him that his wife was dead, and Alex realizes it was his fault, he still sleeps perfectly, showing no real sign of remorse. Alex is mean deep inside and nothing will do to change that. María Clara Santacruz

Alex was the character I liked the most in this novel. Alex is a awesome character because he changes during the novel which makes him more intresting. Besides that, Alex is a character which you don´t know what will he do next in the book, he is a character who just do things without thinking. At the beggining of the story Alex is a violent character, who does acts of brutal violence just because he wants to. Alex is a character which when I read I felt a connexion with because there are some time in which I algo do things without thinking of the consequences. After he is affected by the Lodovic tequique, he changes radically he´s way of acting and thinking. He does not act with the same violence and starts relating violence, sex and his music of Bethoven with disgust and pain. That is where he changes radically, even do he has no care for the people he inflicted pain in the past and still sleeps peacefully, he stops doing the violent things he did in the past. Alex is a character who I liked a lot for his cold and violent way of viewing things, but at the same time I feel anger towards him for the pain he causes other people. Alex is a complex and amazing character which I found amazing. Aurelio Cordovez

the character i liked the most is definitely Alex. As he is the main character of the novel and the one who narrates it all the way through. Alex is a normal teenager that is the leader of his own gang . At first he is a very aggressive teenager. He commits several and brutal crimes, which lead him to be arrested in a part of the novel. Even though he is very violent and aggressive, he as another side too. He enjoys classic music and also art. That is why I like him since he has different sides. i can identify with him because we've all felt anger and acted rudely against others but also have another side. He also shows the ability to change as at the end we can see a very notable change in his character as he is no longer the rude and mean criminal as in the beginning, showing how we can all change who we are in order to become a better person
