When we talk about the theme of a work of literature, we are attempting to express some understanding that is communicated in the work. In the case of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, what would you say is a theme?
HINT: Please try to express the theme in a complete sentence, not as a single word. For example: a possible theme of Romeo and Juliet is not just "love" but "When love breaks boundaries, it ends in tragedy."

One of the themes, I would say, that is present in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" would be technology. But not technology in its own way though. Rather the idea that through technology the humans in the story can actually recreate life and try to live in an almost completely artificial world, which is nothing short of naive. This idea, or theme, is shown throughout much of the story in many different aspects of its society. Food and drinks (even alcoholic ones) are not real but rather imitations made by different companies for a profit. Most animals are not organic or realistic but rather fakes made by, again, multiple companies in order to compensate for the loss of life in the world. Lastly, the presence of humanoid robots, the famous androids, in off- world colonies such as the one in Mars in order to help out with the population is by far the most significant way in which companies are trying to create an artificial world with the use of technology, since they are even going as far as creating artificial humans! And, the people in the story react to these different artificial aspects in the expected way, by buying, using, and consuming way. The idea for me though, as I said before, of humans using technology to create a "new world" is simply naive and foolhardy. Something that cannot last and/ or help in any positive way since they are taking everything that represents something or someone alive out of life.

Would you say, then, that the theme is closer to the idea that technology cannot be used to replace the natural world?

I see the theme of technology expressed in the book but in a different way. It is used as a cure all for problems. Technology replaces the capacity of humans to decide for themselves and to have a criteria for their own. Technology is creating a new era in the human society and it has become essential for us, as well as in the book. We can see that technology in the book is used to control emotions and feelings towards the characters. The author tries to make us realize how technology is starting to impact and change our society in so many different ways. How technology has changed the world even to a point in which nothing is pure, meaning everything even animals have been done by technology gives the reader a feeling that the world is changing and techonolgy is starting to play a very important role in our everyday life. Some day it will be the only thing that would keep us going as a specie.

The main theme of the book is technology, one main effect of wars is technology and that could be an effect of the World War Terminus and nuclear destruction. I see technology expressed in different ways first technology can not replace nature and has to be well used. Technology lets to the creation of androids and to the migration of humans to mars. Technology is changing our planet and we can not stop it but we have to learn how to use it

It is clear that the theme presented in this novel is technology emphasized not only in solving problems but in being able to live in and on it. It basically imprints the idea that humans are able to recreate life to live in a very complex man made world. Throughout the book this theme or idea is shown with elements such as the plot or by the society where it develops because due to necessity they create a world where not even animals are real, they are nothing but fakes that companies create to make a profit out of it. Companies if so deep in order to make a profit that they even make artificial humans (androids) in order to help the population. This shows how can people take advantage of every type of problem. Now, emphasizing in the theme, technology is able to replace life as we know it in order to make a naive society that believes in perfection rather than realizing that they live in a fake world.
