When we talk about the theme of a work of literature, we are attempting to express some understanding that is communicated in the work. In the case of A Clockwork Orange, what would you say is a theme?
HINT: Please try to express the theme in a complete sentence, not as a single word. For example: a possible theme of Romeo and Juliet is not just "love" but "When love breaks boundaries, it ends in tragedy."

I would say the main theme and message the novel tries to gives us is " The Importance of free will". The author strongly believed in that “the freedom to choose is the big human attribute,”, and he expresses this through Alex's behavior, even though is an evil and violent one. Pierre Castro 11 Int.

I would say that the main conflict that Burgess strongly portrays in his novel is the importance of freedom and free will, and he believes in the fact that free will is the only thing that makes us human beings. Also, he portrays the evil of the government in the fact that it suppresses the humans for the benefit of the state. Another theme that Burgess adds to his novel is duality in the many contradictions there are, like good vs. evil, man vs. government, man vs. machine and youth vs. maturity among others. The important thing about duality is the fact that, even if one element is better than the other one, both are needed to explain and understand the world itself. Annie Tveten 11th grade int.

The main theme of this novel is probably that free will is the most important characteristic in a human being, what separates us from other animals and machines. The author manages to comunicate this idea by taking away that free will from his main character and leaving him nothing more than a clockwork orange, an object that is seemingly organic but lacking the essence of life that living beings have, so basically just a robot in disguise. By this the book shows that free will is what makes us human and having the ability to make a decision and choose a path, even if said path is evil, is always better than to have good imposed on us and have no choice at all. The novel sends the reader important messages throughout the book, free will is one of them. At the beginning of the novel Alex is himself, chooses to be the bad guy, but no one stops him or makes him change of idea, he is who he wants to be going the wrong way, to jail. While there, officers make him someone who’s not. Making him get sick every time he feels evil, not letting him choose what he wants to do with his life. In a way, the author compares the life plan of humans and plants. The human race is the only leaving being which grows conditioned to its peers as time passes. Human beings are the only ones who use free will against themselves, even to the point to hurt or more, to kill themselves and take away their lives. As a consequence of constant interrelationship, other live beings keep their original nature from birth to death. Ironically, human beings being the most intelligent live beings in the planet, are the only one who become mechanical, as the title says, A Clockwork Orange. Alegria Ponce 11th

The theme for A Clockwork Orange is the freedom to choose who you want to be. This freedom to choose who you want to be is important because is what separate us from animals and machines. Alex chose the path of violence, raping and theft. In this book the state removes Alex’s’ freedom when they submitted him to the Ludovico Treatment. After this treatment he becomes a predictable person with now rights or freedom to act. This quote from the book resumes this theme: “When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man.” Mauricio Cattani

One important theme of A Clockwork Orange, besides free will, is that people must be conscious of the consequences of their actions. When Alex starts committing crimes such as raping and violence just because he founds it fun and satisfactory, he never mattered of the consequences hell have until he is changed by the Ludovico’s technique that took away his desire of violence. After he went out of jail the author shows us the karma Alex had to go through because of his crimes like the revenge of Alexander and Jack. Alejandra Alvarez 11th

Order in Society vs. Freedom of Choice may be the most important theme of the novel A Clockwork Orange. Not only because it compares the authorities that are the ones how imposed the law, that makes things work better and more organized. They are the ones who have control over people’s actions and provide consequences to people how decerve to be punished or awarded. Citizens must follow laws imposed by the authorities. They have certain delimitations and there is freedom of choice comes andshows that being able to choose what you whant and do what you want comes with responsabilities. In the book, Alex shows no interest in the wealth being of others and just in himself. Throught the book Alex shows how his violent personality makes him act wild and unpredjudice. Although he had a choice of doing the right thing he went to the mean side and didn’t used his freedom of chice in a very inteligent way. Ana Maria Lopez P. 11th.

Theme The theme of A Clockwork Orange basically is the right of freedom and the correct way of using it. Free will in other words. The book is trying to communicate us that the freedom to make choices makes us humans and is the most important characteristic of every single person. That’s why I think the author choose Alex as an example he didn’t make the correct decisions in his life and ended badly his future. In the book, Alex shows no interest in the wealth being of others and just in himself. Some important part of the book is when the state removes Alex’s’ freedom when they submitted him to the Ludovico Treatment, trying to represent as if he himself choose to lose his freedom Juan Eduardo Brito

The main theme for the novel A Clockwork Orange is the importance for a society to have freedom. I am not talking of freedom to do what ever they want, but to act however they want to act without being afraid of it. For example Alex was a really bad human being, but he was free. The state took his freedom when they convicted him to the Ludovico treatment. After this treatment he lost his freedom and he completely changed of personality. Free will is what makes us human beings but if this is taken from us, like the government, we are not acting as humans are. So free will is the most important theme in this book because everything going on has to do with freedom. Joaquin Arias

I think that the theme of A Clockwork Orange is that no one can change who you want to be and what you want to do, how far they go to change you, you will eventually find yourself doing what you want in the end, change is only up to you. This theme is expressed in the novel after Alex is sent to jail and he is submitted to the experimental treatment that suppresses his will to do wrong through torture basically, Alex tries to commit suicide since he finds life unbearable. He then finds the treatment no longer has a hold on him but he realizes that crime and violence are no longer what interest him.

The theme in A Clockwork Orange is the ability to make choices. I think this because Alex is forced to be a good person and the doctors took away his ability to make choices because he could not do bad things, even if he wanted to. The whole books revolves around this theme and the question is: Is taking away free will right? even if its for good purposes ? Akio Kihara
