When we talk about the theme of a work of literature, we are attempting to express some understanding that is communicated in the work. In the case of The Handmaid's Tale, what would you say is a theme?
HINT: Please try to express the theme in a complete sentence, not as a single word. For example: a possible theme of Romeo and Juliet is not just "love" but "When love breaks boundaries, it ends in tragedy."

The book The Handmaid’s Tale has many themes that represent the novel. One of these themes that is most shown throughout the novel is that women are part of society and they should not only be appreciated for giving birth to children but because they are human beings. In the book the society is experimenting a declining in births and for this reason women become objects only useful if they are fertile. They are no longer part of the society’s choices, they no longer have the power to choose what to do with their lives since their task is already chosen. I believe that Margaret Atwood made this point very clear in the novel, women are as important and welcome in society as men and they should work together to make a better society. In the book I was able to see that neither women nor men lived a happy life due to the fact that liberty does no longer exist in their lives. It is true that women’s role of giving birth to children is crucial to society, but it is not what defines them as persons and that is the most important aspect in life. This is what makes each person part of society.

One of the main themes of these book is freedom is the main key of a human because people in these community aren’t free they are placed in fake families to reproduce to serve the family and hey have been taken apart from their real family. People aren’t free of speech not even in the cloths they can were. Women are valued by the fertile life and if they are young. This novel makes me realize that people in life should care about what others were or do because the importance is that they are free and can use and do what they want. In these women are just things that need to reproduce to give their babies to the women that cant have babies.

The book The Handmaid's tale is a book that gives away many themes. The theme that compelled me the most is women being treated as instruments and not as human beings. This is a theme that shows that people not only women can do more to help a society than what their physical bodies allow them to. In the story women are no longer part of society and are treated as instruments to give birth during the era of declining births. A women has no right to learn, read, write, or give an opinion that can later improve the society. I think that this theme is one that shows how bad a comunity or society can be damaged in the future.

During this novel almost all the characters if not all, suffer from lack of freedom, however the ones who are most affected are the handmaids. At the end, this little freedom has serious impacts on their lives and alters their way they think about themselves. We can see all this absence of freedom constantly throughout the book. For example handmaids are not supposed to have any friendship or loyalty with any other handmaid and if they are discovered they would receive harsh punishments. This creates a big feeling of fear among them. Also handmaids must always use these big red dresses and wings to cover them completely and they are not allowed to choose their clothes. Women also lost a lot of rights such as reading, writing and also owning any property. Women and especially handmaids can’t do anything that might make them independent. Additionally handmaid’s later start to see themselves as reproductive objects they are not longer considered human beings. In Gilead women became to be useful only if their ovaries are valuable. All this suppression of rights and also their value affect women and their perception of themselves which is a consequence of the absence of freedom. Gabriela Molina 11th grade

The Handmaid’s Tale has a very controversial and discussing subject novel to talk about especially what refers about women roll in society. The theme comes directly from this idea. In the Republic of Gilead women were only appreciated by their fertile abilities. This means that the only way to be treated as a women deserves was to be able to have children. Women should be treated as humans and not seeing as a reproductive machines, no matter what the circumstances are in society or the world. The handmaids were discriminated and hide behind a “security” but the only thing that they did was having them as the only tool to continue the totalitarian state. The weren’t allow to read because rulers feared they could question their command. Women used especial outfits and did a series of routines treated as a subhuman specie. Women is the perfect creation that complements life and even though they are an important piece of generation existence, they shouldn’t be judge or discriminated by this ability. After reading the novel the reader can appreciate what women are capable of instead of only being servants or a reproductive machine. Ecuador is working with a big campaign against “machismo” or sexism against women who suffered oppressions from men who thinks they are superior. I can connect the novel with this campaign because this is what happen in Gilead, superiority is genres. The message of the campaign and of the novel are similar, to respect women as a divine spirit for their qualities and ideas. Mateo Guerrero 11th Grade
