By now, you're familiar with the major division of conflicts in literature (and, perhaps, in life)--internal and external. What conflicts do you observe in this novel? What predictions, if any, can you make about how these conflicts will develop or be resolved?

I believe the strongest conflicts in the novel are: Internally, the dilemma of, is it better to follow your own wills, even though they are evil and wicked? or is it better to follow a traced path, without free will. This is experienced through the thoughts of the main character, Alex. This conflict will continue to develop as Alex continues growing and experiencing new adventures in life. He might have new internal conflicts in the future, but he will definitely continue in having conflicts, like any person in life.
Externally: The biggest conflict in the novel is the violence experienced in Society. This is represented through the evil deeds Alex's gang follow. A violent one, a unhealthy life style (drinking drugged milk), and an unethical path (they are rapers, robbers, killers). This issue in society will keep in developing. Through out human history, we have being always surrounded by society conflicts. And they will always exist. About 75 years ago we faced second world war, and that was a conflict. Now a days we face poverty as another society conflicts. Conflicts do not disappear, but change and adapt to new eras.

Internal: The main internal conflict of the novel is the importance of free will vs. following society’s rules. This conflict is portrayed in Alex’s thoughts, as he debates with himself is free will is better (even if it may lead to violence) than to follow society’s rules. This conflict will remain with Alex as other problems develop that imply the same type of conflict. External: The main external conflict is the fact that the society is a dystopia where crime rules the streets and “ultra-violence” is an everyday matter. You can see this by Alex and his droogs, when they go out through the streets robbing, raping, beating and murdering people just for the fun of it. Maybe the exact issue of criminality or violence is not something as common as it is in the book in our society, but society will always have conflicts and if they end (which is improbable), they will soon be replaced by others. Internal: the main internal conflict of the novel A Clockwork Orange is the right to have free will decisions vs. imposing against free will to have better citizens. At the beginning of the novel the main character, Alex, decides to be an evil boy who goes against the rules of society and creates fear within people. He has free will, but decided to do wrong, the conflict is: is the government responsible for people like Alex, and should they use their minds to impose against free will to have a better community? External: the external conflict of the novel is violence in society and the decrease of moral values in the society. In the novel we can see how Alex, Peter, Georgie and Dim have no appreciation for anyone or anything. They rob, rape, destroy property and don´t have any feelings of regret. In my point of view Alex has this behavior because he has absent parents, who have not encourage values like respect and solidarity in his development.

After reading A Colckwork Orange, I have decided that the main internal conflict of this book is, how important is to make a free will decition vs. following what others expect about you. As we can conclude from the novel, Alex lives his life by doing dredful actions day by day. He decides to live a life against society and what is good. By doing this he evoids completely the goodness, so then the balance that a person should have with good and bad things falls completely and turns him into an awful killing machine.Beating, robbing, raping and murdering are some of the many things that come from a person how because of the choices he made become into. The main external conflict of this book is the violent actions that people like Alex commit in a violent society. The lack of moral values in people and the lack of aspirations in these peoples lifes. This may come from the violent society that they come from but also because of the lack of education and respect in their life. ANA Maria Lopez P. 11th
