In the story Blindness there are many examples of themes like; faith and hope are the only strength that brings us back from our worst moments. The blind people lost their hope of achieveing what they needed and bringing their sight back. Also that strength is important in hard moments, for them an example can be when they fougth with the ones that got in charge of the food and didnt distribute the food fairly which caused many people to starve.

Under my point of view one of the main themes of Blindness by Saramago is “humanity's lack of compassion for strangers in difficult times”. Each of the problems expressed in the novel show how people think only in their own benefit, especially in difficult situations. When situations as the one expressed in the book happen, people are confused and don’t know how to act or what to do. People started to fight for their necessities and forgot the needs of the rest. Each person thinks only about himself/herself and forgets that others need the same or more. For example the King of ward 3 only thinks in his benefit and doesn’t care to use his gun to get what he wants. People are weak in difficult situations and thinking only in themselves make problems worst. Only the doctor’s wife was compassionate on others even though she didn’t know them, but she still had her sight. Carmen Maria Saenz Int

The novel Blindness has numerous themes but there is one that I considered the most important. That is how human beings can become selfish and only think about themselves when some tragedy is happening to the rest. This story proves exactly this theme because when everyone starts getting the “white blindness” the ones who didn’t have it, instead of helping did everything to not get infected. Instead of trying to solve this problem or to help the people who are infected they don’t do anything at all and run away of the problems. That´s why the entire city becomes chaos and there is no one that can stop this. This novel teach us that we don’t have to be selfish and only think about us, instead we have to think about the rest because we are not the only ones that pass for these things. This novel can be interpreted in a lot of ways. It has some thoughtful themes that make it strong and deep. One of these themes is that people shouldn’t be selfish and should have solidarity with others. In the mental hospital if people would tried to organize in benefit of everyone the living style they had wouldn’t be so harsh. They were all going through the same problem and no one was better than other. People should learn that as a group and working together changes and problems are solved in an easier way. Its a blind society literal and metaphorically speaking.

Blindness is a book that creates many ideas in the reader and has various themes depending in their points of view. For me, on of the main themes is that solidarity is necessary in times of fear and crisis to help overcome the hard times with unanimity and support. Since the doctor´s wife is the main character and she is the only one immune to lose her vision she shows solidarity with the blind people who are in the asylum and later in the city. She stays in calm giving them hope, support and helps the blind people with their own needs in times of chaos and desperation. The doctor´s wife shows solidarity for example when she gave her food to the blind people or by creating order in the asylum. She didn’t care about her own needs, she first thought about the needs of the blind people. Maria Jose Carrera

This novel contains many different themes but the most important one is how humans show their true nature in difficult times. The novel addresses several reactions to blindness, risk of death, and lack of control from those who act destructively to those who make the best of the situation, questioning whether it is really in our nature to be selfish, selfless, or somewhere in between. Or if it is a result of "nurture," or the environment each person is put in. There is also the theme of love, how love can surrpass many obstacles. The man´s wife wanted to be with her husband so she fake her blindness to be in the hospital with him.

If we talk about the theme in one sentence would be: "solidarity and loyalty are human values that demonstrate that love has no limits and that life often the only way to learn to appreciate the miracles of each day is losing them for a moment even if that moment seems to be eternal."

The book Blindness shows how as everybody goes blind, they don’t only lose their ability to see, but it takes them into a complete state of chaos. This book shows human beings in their lowest point of despair and crisis.

I think that the theme of this novel is represented in mostly one character, who is the doctor’s wife. In her we can see how inner strength, hope, faith and perseverance lead you to what you want to achieve no matter how difficult or impossible it seems. It is a big task to deal with a community that is unable to see, but this character transmits us this idea of how important is not only the vision itself, but the vision beyond, where all of our expectations are. If you want something and you propose yourself to achieve it, you can, with courage, perseverance, inner strength and hope. The doctor’s wife is the perfect example of the lesson that this novel left on me. bernarda alvarez

The main theme of the novel Blindness is mainly the primitive instincts observed in humans in a given situation of desperation and any kind of severe need. The novel shows a society in which hunger strikes and a whole new organizational system must be created. People are going back to living in clans, as society was millions of years ago, in order to be able to be safe and look for food and shelter. The rule of the strongest can be clearly observed in the mental hospital when the leader was the man with the gun. His aisle was benefited with extra food rations since they were his followers. When the man was killed, his successor was the born blind man who had taken his gun. Strength decided who the leader was. As the time passed by, people tended to forget any rule of civilization. There were violations and no sense of respect for the rest of the humans, but for themselves. People would no longer be able to control their needs, and would act as instinct tells them to.

The novel Blindness by Jose Saramago, talkes about a type of blindness that represent society. A society that is careless. Careless because this society does not care about anyone. If somebody can make it then it doesnt matter what happens to others. They didnt come blind they made themselves blind, so they can actually see what is happening in the world, maybe povery, maybe evil that people cause towards others, maybe other diseases like cancer, or terminal sickness. People who are helpless to progress who are only interested in themselves, that is why I think that a good theme for this book is "being sellfish takes you nowhere, see beyond your sight and be helpful to society, enjoy others´ ideas, therefore progress will appear"

Blindness theme is very complicated to describe, because it englobes several definitions. The general theme talks about handling difficult and stressing situations with strenght and courage. "They thinked I am blind which is to be dead which was wrong. Because many people born blind and turn blind also and survive.". Even though they were living in a complete chaos they learned to manage themselves and live for surviving.

This novel by Jose Saramago can be interpreted in many ways. My interpretation was metaphorical, i think that the epidemic blindness that the society was going through represented a moral blindness between the people. This means that the people couldn't really see what was going around them, not physically but emotionally, they couldn't see all the problems that they had, specially when it came to helping people and having solidarity. It took an epidemic catastrophe for people to realize that. So the theme to be would be that sometimes it takes a big thing for people to realize how they are and how the world around them is. The Theme of the book Blindness, can have many interpretations and many perspectives. My opinion about what the theme is about, is how the society never looses hope. Not even a disease that has cause nearly the whole population to be blind, stops them from trying to escape the mental hospital, figure out whats going on, or even fight the survive with food. In many parts I see they have no fear, they just want to be set free even though they are blind. Always keeping there hopes up and always trying to find solution to there disease. Thats why I think the main theme about this book is the hope and strength the society has.
